About The Caledonian Society of Otago

The Caledonian Society was established on August 12, 1862 when a meeting consisting “of about forty gentlemen” reached the decision influenced by the success of such organizations in Australia and elsewhere to form the Otago Caledonian Society. The Caledonian Society was the first Scottish Society to be formed in New Zealand with the principal objects being the promotion of Benevolence, National Literature and Customs and Accomplishments. The Caledonian Society instigated Night Education Classes in Dunedin establishing an institution that became the King Edward Technical College. The Caledonian Society was incorporated under the act of the Provincial Council of Otago in 1874.

The advancement of Athletic Sports combined with traditional Highland Games has always been one of the foremost objects of the Caledonian Society. In the early years the Games were conducted annually on New Years Day with the first gathering held on January 1, 2 and 3, 1863.

The Highland Games organised by the Caledonian Society are still operating today at the new Caledonian Ground Logan Park, Dunedin, opened in 1999. For some time the Games were held biannually in country areas, however the current Caledonian Society Directors are now trying to establish and grow the Games annually in Dunedin in line with the original concept. In 2010 the Caledonian Society Highland Games will be held on Sunday November 28th, with fellow Scottish Societies Clubs and Clans combining to bring together a great day of traditional Scottish entertainment for all ages.

The Caledonian Society also sponsors Queen o’ the Heather entrants and is available to support other organisations with displays of Highland events.
